Description
The White Swan Hotel is a former coaching inn and currently the principal hotel located on Bondgate Within. It features a mid to late 19th century front and is built of ashlar stone. The building has two storeys and an attic, with ten windows. The ground floor has a string course above it, a cill string at the first floor, and a moulded eaves cornice. The roof is slate with three chimneys, and there are five pedimented dormers with scroll sides, along with four circular dormer windows. The late glazed sash windows have moulded architraves and cill brackets.
The three leftmost ground floor bays project slightly and feature channelled rustication, forming an arcade of three bays. The central entrance, which leads to a garage, is flanked by windows with arcaded fanlights and has a stone balcony above. The fourth bay from the right also projects slightly and has channelled masonry with an arched main entrance and a stone balcony annexe.
Inside, the hotel boasts the remarkable 'Olympic Room' at the back, which was salvaged from the sister ship of the Titanic when it was broken up at Jarrow in 1935. This room measures 59 by 63 feet and has a height of 12 feet 3 inches, designed in the Louis XV style with details taken from the Palace of Versailles. The room features three and a half bays, with bay windows to the north and east, and three aisles. A large ornamental fireplace on the west wall has a richly carved frame for the mirror above it, and the panelled walls are adorned with carved festoons, especially around the doorway.
