Description
The Hotspur Gateway, also known as Bondgate Tower, is a Grade I listed building located in Bondgate Within. It was built around 1450 by the 2nd Earl of Northumberland, serving as the east gate in the former town walls. The tower is polygonal on each side of the arched thoroughfare on the outside, with a straight front to the west and is constructed of rough ashlar.
The structure consists of three stages and features a central segmental archway with a vaulted passage supported by four wide ribs. On the east face, there are remains of large corbels in the center, a panel below displaying a much faded lion rampant by a sculptor named Matthew, and narrow lookouts. The west face has a slight setback above the second stage, with a plain two-light mullion window above the archway and a blocked cross window to the left. Additionally, there are portcullis slits in the outer arch. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
