Description
Bloodybush Pillar is an inscribed pillar dating from 1828, constructed from dressed stone. It stands approximately 15 feet high and features a battered square pier. On the east side, there is an inscription detailing the boundary between Northumberland and Roxburghshire, along with information about the property owners, Sir J.E. Swinburn and William Oliver Rutherford. The inscription also mentions a toll gate located near Oakenshaw Bridge, listing the toll rates for various animals and noting that these tolls are collected once a day. It warns that individuals who evade or refuse to pay the toll will be prosecuted for trespass. Additionally, the pillar provides distances to several locations, including Lewisburn Colliery, Mounces, Bellingham, Hexham, Dinlabyre, Castleton, Hawick, and Jedburgh.
