Description
This is a monument erected in memory of William Forster, who was shot on this spot on September 26, 1891, at the age of 38 (or possibly 68 years). The inscription reads: "THIS MONUMENT ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM FORSTER, BROWN KNOWE," followed by a religious text. The monument features a calciferous sandstone stepped plinth and a polished Dalbeattie granite shaft, topped by a tall tapering calciferous sandstone column. It is surrounded by a low wall with cast iron speared railings. William Forster was a gamekeeper who was shot by a poacher. The monument is located on the boundary between Nicholforest and Bewcastle civil parishes.
