Description
The Round House in the center of the farmyard at Roanstrees is a probable flax drying shed dating from the early 19th century, as indicated on the 1832 tithe map for John Dodgson. It features whitewashed rubble walls and a sandstone slab roof, with a small circular plan and a steeply pitched conical roof. The building has a plank door set in a quoined surround, and casement windows on either side, which are a later addition. Although there is no recorded use for this building, its proximity to a nearby flax mill suggests it may have been used for the flax industry. Other theories propose that it could have served as a lock-up, given that the farm once belonged to a Justice of the Peace, or that it was constructed as a bet to demonstrate that such a structure could be built. This building is unique in the area.
