Description
Cumcrook and the adjoining barn is a farmhouse and barn dated 1685, featuring the initials R(&)M R, which stand for Robert and Margaret Routledge, above the entrance. The building has alterations dated 1734, attributed to John and Mary Routledge, inscribed on a stone at the first-floor level. It is constructed of whitewashed sandstone rubble on projecting plinth stones, with flush painted quoins. The roof is covered with graduated local slate and Welsh slate on the barn, and there are stone and cream brick ridge chimney stacks.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with the barn situated under a common roof. There is a 20th-century door in a quoined surround with a dated and inscribed lintel. To the right of the entrance is an original small square fire window with a chamfered surround. The original narrow windows on the ground and first floor at the extreme right have been blocked, while all other windows have been enlarged to 2-pane sashes in chamfered painted stone surrounds. The barn to the left features plank doors and 19th-century casement windows.
External stone steps lead to a loft with a similar loft entrance to the left that does not have steps. An adjoining single-storey byre to the left and other outbuildings are not included in the listing.
