Description

This building is a guano storage shed located 750 metres east of the junction with High Buston Road. It dates from the 18th century and was extended in the late 18th or early 19th century. The structure is built of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, except for the brick rear elevation. The roof is made of Welsh slate, with the northern part covered in 20th-century roofing felt.

The building has a long, low rectangular shape. On the east side, there are right-of-centre boarded double doors set under a segmental arch, a blocked doorway, and three blocked windows. There is a row of blocked rectangular vents at mid-height. The left part of the wall and each return feature a triple-stepped batter, and the gables are coped. The returns also display similar blocked vents and slits in the gables. The rear elevation has comparable openings, with the right end being stone and having a stepped batter, while the left-of-centre joint indicates where the extension was added.

Inside, the shed features late 18th or early 19th-century strapped king-post trusses supported by wall posts at the rear.

This building is included for its historical interest, as Alnmouth imported guano, a type of fertiliser, in the 18th century. Due to its strong smell, it was stored as far from the main harbour as possible. After the 1806 flood and the change in the course of the River Aln, the former estuary silted up, leading to the shed's current use as a barn.
