Description

Aln House is a house built around 1740, constructed of brick in an irregular stretcher bond on a stone basement, featuring cut dressings that include a tooled-and-margined ashlar flush band, sills, and lintels. The roof is made of blue slate. The building has two storeys above a basement, with a symmetrical layout of 2 + 1 + 2 bays.

The exterior includes a chamfered basement plinth and a flush band at the first floor. There are three steps leading up to the central fielded-panel door, which has a five-pane overlight and is topped by a later inscription reading 'ALN HOUSE'. The ground floor has twelve-pane sash windows, while the upper floor features 18-pane sashes. Three small basement windows decrease in size with the slope of the street. A rainwater head with a Percy crescent is located at the left end of the building. The roof has slightly-swept eaves, a coped left gable on a moulded kneeler, and a rebuilt stack at the left end. The left return shows a contemporary rear outshut with an inserted twelve-pane sash window.

Inside, the south ground-floor room features contemporary pine panelling, a bolection-moulded dado rail, a dentil cornice, and a moulded stone fireplace. The north room has a re-set corner cupboard with an arched glazed door and pilasters, along with a corner fireplace that has a wood surround and mantel. There is a closed-string dog-leg stair with turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail, which continues from the cellars to the attic. The doors on the first floor are made of three fielded panels.
