Description
This is a house, likely dating from the later 17th century, that has been altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of squared stone with cut stone dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The gable end facing Northumberland Street features a timber lintel where an old shop front once stood, above a 12-pane sash window that was originally from a house in Newcastle. A renewed 6-pane sash window sits in the gable itself. The left return presents a single storey and attic, with four irregular bays. A renewed vertical-panelled door is set within an old chamfered surround near the right end of the building. The house has plain sash windows and two late 19th-century brick dormers with 6-pane sashes. A 20th-century bay window is located near the left end.
Inside, the roof structure displays six jointed upper-cruck trusses with collars, and a ridge-beam supported between overlapped ends of the blades. The blades exhibit halved-and-pegged joints just above the wall tops. The lower parts of the blades are embedded in the walls and tenoned at the base to connect with the first-floor beams.
This represents a rare survival of a vernacular roof type, which was probably common in the local area. It is comparable to the re-set trusses from Gloster Hill at Dunstan Hall.
