Description

The Old Harbour Wall is a Grade II listed structure, likely built in the 18th century. It is constructed from large squared stones and features a coping made of large irregular slabs. The wall stands 0.8 metres high as it runs west from Garden Terrace, then turns north alongside the tidal flats, where this section rises to 1.8 metres high externally and 0.8 metres internally. The final section of the wall turns westwards and then north again, with a rebuilt upper part that has gabled coping, ending in a rough ramp-down. The overall length of the wall is 250 metres. This structure is included in the listing for its historical significance, as Alnmouth was an important corn port in the 18th century. The harbour became silted after a flood in 1806, which altered the course of the River Aln.
