Description

The Old Kennels, which includes a former kennel-man's house and surrounding yard walls, dates back to 1768. Constructed from ashlar and squared sandstone, the house features a Welsh slate roof and a stone chimney. The building is designed in the Gothick style, characterized by pointed doorways and windows with Y-tracery set in flat-faced, chamfered surrounds.

The single-storey kennel block has three bays, with a central doorway flanked by windows and battlements on the rubble wall to the south. The ashlar returns on the east and west sides have similar features, including cross-loops, and a datestone inscribed with "L A I 1768" (for Lancelot Allgood) is located below the central embrasure on the west return. The north side has a large central opening and flanking doorways, but the structure is roofless.

The two-storey house has two bays and features ashlar quoins. It includes a blocked doorway and a two-light window, with a square opening above, on the west side. The low-pitched roof has coped gables and an end stack. A flight of stone steps leads up to a pointed archway on the north return, with similar door and window details on the rear.

The south yard is enclosed on two sides by a tall flat-coped rubble wall, with a pointed archway near the junction with the kennel block. The east yard is surrounded on three sides by a low ashlar wall with chamfered coping, featuring a raised section with a pointed archway in the center of the east wall. The west yard is enclosed on two sides by a low rubble wall with chamfered coping. Overall, the kennel block serves as a picturesque landscape feature, while the house is currently used for storage.
