Description
Nos 4 and 5 Percy Street are two-storey buildings in the Egyptian classical style, built in the 19th century. They feature three windows and are constructed of ashlar stone. The façade is adorned with four giant pilasters and a palmette frieze at the top, leading to an entablature that has a central panel inscribed with 'Scientific and Mechanical Institution', flanked by dies with carved wreaths. There is a string band below the first floor. The windows are glazing bar sash types with moulded architraves, and the first floor has entablatures above the windows, while the ground floor features segmental relieving arches with cill brackets. The central doorway is a pylon style with a bracketted entablature that has 'Mechanics' Institute' inscribed on the lintel, and it includes double doors with four panels. At the rear, there is a kitchen block that faces Gill's Lane. The building was designed by William Smith and the land was given for the Mechanics' Institute and development in 1831 by General Lambert.
