Description
Nos. 1 to 3 Front Street are three cottages that are part of a planned village development from the late 18th century, designed by Sir Edward Swinburne, who passed away in 1786. The cottages are constructed from dressed stone and topped with a graduated Lakeland slate roof. They are single-storey buildings with ten bays in total. The front features three boarded doors, each with a semicircular relieving arch above. There are small Yorkshire sash windows, along with three larger 20th-century windows. A band runs above the windows, and wooden brackets support the widely-overhanging eaves. The roof is gabled, featuring one ridge and two end stacks.
Inside, each room originally had a transverse, brick, segmental vault, although these are now hidden by false ceilings.
