Description

Nos. 4 and 5 on Front Street are two cottages that are part of a planned village development from the late 18th century, designed by Sir Edward Swinburne, who passed away in 1786. The cottages were altered in the early 19th century. They are constructed from dressed stone with ashlar dressings and feature a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The buildings are single storey with six bays. Each cottage has a central boarded door, flanked by small two-light mullioned windows, with a sash window in each light. The gabled roof has flat coping and a renewed ridge stack.

Inside, each room was originally built with a transverse, brick, segmental vault, though these vaults are now obscured by false ceilings.
