Description
Hawkwell House is a house dating back to 1679, with an earlier core and a facade altered in the early 19th century. The house is built of scored stucco with an ashlar plinth, and has a stone slate roof. It is arranged in an L-shape, with a two-storey lean-to in the re-entrant angle on the left return, and lower service buildings attached to the rear. The main facade is three storeys high and three bays wide. The central doorway is framed by a chamfered surround, with a lintel inscribed "P RE 1679”, a hoodmould, and a two-light mullioned overlight. The ground and first floors have sixteen-pane sashes in raised surrounds, while the second floor has shortened twelve-pane sashes in similar surrounds. The roof is gabled with flat coping and corniced end stacks.
On the right return is an early 19th century pedimented Tuscan porch with a panelled door. To the left of the porch are twelve-pane sashes. To the right are four-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on each floor.
The drawing room features late 17th century panelling, a bolection-moulded fireplace, a dado rail, and moulded skirting boards and cornice. The dining room has similar panelling and an early 17th century stone fireplace with a multi-moulded surround and a Tudor-arched lintel. The study has a fireplace with a bolection-moulded surround and Delft tiles. In the hall are an inserted 17th century fireplace with a surround carved in relief with stylised oak leaves, and moulded beams. The back stair has splat balusters, while the main stair is a replacement from around 1930, also with splat balusters. Two-panelled doors are found throughout the house.
