Description
Harptree House is a house that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of rubble with brick dressings, stone copings, wooden lintels, and has a plain tile roof. The original 17th-century core is at the rear, while the 18th-century wing extends at a right angle to the street, creating an L-shaped plan. The house has two storeys and features five windows on the main garden front, all of which are 6-pane 19th-century sashes. There are two dormers, one with one light and the other with two lights. The central doorway is topped with a flat stone hood supported by carved brackets and features a 19th-century part-glazed door with flush beaded panels. There are end brick stacks, and the rear outshut leading to the courtyard includes a reused 3-light cavetto moulded mullion with 19th-century casements. The roadside attic window in the 18th-century section has a 2-light ovolo mullion. Inside, there is a staircase from around 1800 with a fluted newel post, a mahogany rail, and carved risers. The drawing room on the ground floor to the right has 18th-century features including a chair rail, shutters, and two buffet niches, one of which retains its original shelving, along with a fine marble chimney piece. The dining room on the ground floor to the left has similar features from around 1800.
