Description

Harptree Court is a house built around 1800, with additions made around 1820, possibly designed by Charles Harcourt Masters of Bath. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has slate roofs, showcasing a classical style with neo-Classical porches. The entrance front features two storeys and thirteen bays, with a five-bay central block that is slightly advanced and has a pediment, along with lower flanking wings that have advanced pedimented end bays. The central block includes round-headed openings on the ground floor and straight-headed openings above. During a survey in May 1985, these openings were being refenestrated with six-pane sash windows. The flanking wings contain 19th-century casements, while the end bays have Venetian windows on the ground floor (with the eastern window blocked) and tripartite openings above, all fitted with 19th-century casements. The entrance features a Greek Doric tetrastyle porch with an ironwork balcony above, a Venetian doorway with an eight raised and fielded panel door and reveals, and a patterned fanlight. The building has a moulded cornice, a plain parapet, and ashlar stacks with terracotta pots. To the left, there are two-storey and one-storey service additions. The garden front mirrors the design of the entrance front but includes two semi-circular bows on the central block, with a distyle Ionic porch in between and a balcony above. The end bays feature tripartite windows on the ground floor with consoles supporting the entablature and decorative vase and swag friezes. Inside, the entrance hall boasts a three-bay coupled Tuscan column arcade and an oval domed stairwell, along with several fine chimney pieces. The grounds were laid out by C.H. Masters around 1800.
