Description
There are six sandstone headstones located against the west wall of the Church of St. Mary in Stamfordham.
-
The first headstone belongs to Ellen Scott, dated 1809. It features a scrolled pedimented top and a panel carved with swags and symbols representing death and eternity, along with bold lettering.
-
The second headstone is for Ann Harrison, dated 1730, and also has a scrolled pedimented top.
-
The third headstone has a worn name and dates from the mid-18th century. It features a scrolled pedimented top adorned with tassels, an angel, and symbols of death.
-
The fourth headstone commemorates John Carwick from the mid-18th century. It includes a cartouche with a scrolled pedimented top and scrolled sides, inscribed with "Nigh this place lieth ye body of John Carwick barber, of Stamfordham."
-
The fifth headstone has a similar well-cut cartouche with an angel's head and a shell, but its inscription is worn.
-
The sixth headstone, also from the mid-18th century, features a scrolled pedimented top, an angel, and a worn inscription.
