Description
The Butter Cross is a market cross built in 1735, located in Stamfordham on The Green. It is a small, square, single-storey building constructed of ashlar with a stone slate roof. Each side features a single round arch, with alternate courses of stone that project slightly to create banded rustication. The voussoirs also project alternately, and there are moulded imposts. The building has a pyramidal roof topped with a square stone section that displays the date and a worn inscription on a shield on the east side, as well as a sundial on the south side. The other two sides, which once had open arches, are now blocked. The roof has a ball finial and a vane. Inside, the original roof timbers are still present. The Butter Cross is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
