Description

Hawkwel Farmhouse is a house dating to the 17th century, with additions from the early 19th century. It is constructed of random rubble with a Welsh slate roof. The house is two storeys high and originally comprised three bays, later extended by the inclusion of a two-bay former cottage to the right and a two-bay outbuilding to the left.

The original part of the house has a 20th-century glazed door set within a 17th-century chamfered alternating-block stone surround and hoodmould. Flanking this door are 20th-century tripartite windows also set beneath 17th-century hoodmoulds. Above these are 12-pane sashes. A large stone is positioned above the door, likely the former doorstep to an upper-floor doorway, suggesting a possible origin as a bastle-type dwelling. The flanking sections of the house have similar windows. The roof is gabled with a banded ridge and end stacks. The walls are approximately 3 feet thick.
