Description

Rookwood House, dated 1717, features the initials T M (Thomas and Mary Wardle) on its door surround. The adjacent cottage is likely from the late 18th century. The front of the house is made of squared stone of near-ashlar quality, while the other elevations and the cottage are constructed from squared stone as well. Both buildings have Welsh slate roofs and the house is designed in a T-plan.

The front elevation of the house is two storeys high with five symmetrical bays. It has rusticated quoins and sill bands. The central door, which has been renewed, is set in a lugged architrave beneath a plain frieze that features a re-cut inscription and a pedimented hood supported by consoles. The windows are renewed 12-pane sash windows within architraves. The gables are coped and sit on moulded kneelers, with stepped and corniced end stacks that have paired shafts. The returns of the house display 4-pane iron-barred casements. The lower cottage to the right is two storeys with two bays, featuring a renewed door on the far left and plain sash windows. Its right gable is coped on a moulded kneeler, and it has a right end stack similar to that of the house.

On the rear elevation, the house's rear wing includes an arched stair window, which has been renewed, located on the right return, along with an old ridge stack. The cottage has a single-storey gabled rear wing.

The interior has not been seen. There are 20th-century extensions added to the rear and east of the house wing, as well as to the east of the cottage wing, but these are not of special interest.
