Description
A group of 22 boundary stones located in Laker Plantation, approximately 440 yards north of Belsay Dene House, date from 1788 and earlier. Made of sandstone, each stone stands about 2 feet high.
Eighteen of the stones are inscribed on one side with the letter M for Middleton and on the other side with the letter S for Swinburne. Four stones bear the initials TM for Thomas Middleton and JS for John Swinburne, with three of these stones dated 1788.
These stones mark a complex line through the wood and represent a boundary dispute that was actively pursued by Edward Swinburne until his death in 1786, and resolved by his son John Swinburne in 1788. Additionally, five stones have been removed and are now located at Swanstead near Belsay.
