Description

The garden wall to West End Terrace and Evans Almshouse, with an attached pant, dates from the later 19th century, incorporating an older pant that has been re-set. The wall is constructed of snecked stone, while the pant is made of squared stone with ashlar dressings, resting on a rock-faced base. It features arched coping and rounded corners, connecting to an outbuilding at the west end of West End Terrace and another outbuilding to the east of Evans Almshouse. There are four gateways with monolithic arched piers. The square pant at the south-east corner has a moulded pediment on raised pilasters on each face; the tap at the front was missing at the time of the survey, and there is a small opening with a cast-iron door on the right return. A cast-iron globe finial sits on a moulded stone base. Built into the wall to the right of the pant is a stone with a raised shaped panel and an incised inscription that reads "ME/ ST DAVIDS DA(illegible)/ 1854."

Historically, Marion Evans Essex, born Mary Ann Essex around 1791 and who died in 1868, made numerous charitable donations, including approximately £1,000 in 1854 to pipe water to Humshaugh, likely funding the construction of the pant, which originally stood in the centre of the road. The carved stone in the wall is probably linked to the pant. The Evans Almshouse, around which the garden wall was built, was also financed by Marion and features an inscription dating it to St David’s Day in 1864. The years 1854 and 1864 mark the 25th and 35th anniversaries, respectively, of the death of Marion’s husband, David.
