Description

The farmbuilding range attached to the east of Butterknowes Farmhouse dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly-squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings and features Welsh slate roofs. The building has a two-storey cartshed and granary, which includes a projecting L-shaped stable wing and a continuing L-plan barn with a circular gingang at the rear.

The cartshed and granary has a three-bay segmental arcade with four part-slatted windows above. The stable features boarded double doors under a segmental arch and an additional boarded door, topped with a hipped roof. The right side of the stable has a boarded door flanked by boarded windows, all set in chamfered surrounds. The lower barn on the right includes a stable door and a part-slatted window, while the projecting gabled section shows a boarded door on the inner return.

On the rear elevation, the cartshed and granary displays two boarded doors, with the left door set in a chamfered alternating-block surround and four slatted windows above. The barn has a boarded door in a similar surround to the right of the circular gingang, which is supported by five rectangular piers, each with a chamfered plinth and set-back, topped with a conical roof.

Inside the gingang, larger east and west piers support a heavy tie-beam. The roof structure features a central post with raking struts leading to two levels of curved purlins.

There is a covered yard to the south of the cartshed and granary, an asbestos-roofed outbuilding to the north, and altered hemmels to the south of the barn, which are not of special interest.
