Description

The west part of the farmbuilding group to the north of Maudlin Farmhouse is a barn with a gingang and a cartshed/granary. The barn likely dates from the late 18th century, while the other parts are from the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared stone, with the 19th-century sections featuring tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings. The roof is covered with Welsh slates, except for synthetic blue slates on the cartshed/granary. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with the barn and gingang on the west and the cartshed/granary range extending west from the south end.

On the south elevation, the end of the barn on the right has a stable door, a renewed window in a chamfered surround, and three pigeon holes beneath a coped gable. To the left, the cartshed/granary features a four-bay arcade of chamfered segmental arches, with renewed windows above in alternating-block surrounds that have slightly projecting sills. The far left bay is a later addition, with a boarded door and a pitching door, topped by a hip-ended roof.

The left return shows the projecting cartshed/granary range on the right, which has casement windows with timber lintels at the end and three slatted granary windows on the inner return. The barn displays a boarded door and a stable door to the right of the gingang, which has seven square piers, including a larger stepped pair on the north and south sides, and a conical roof.

Inside, the gingang has a heavy transverse beam between the larger piers, with a separate tie-beam above that supports a central octagonal post with radial struts. There are two levels of curving chamfered purlins.

The outbuilding to the north of the gingang and the altered building to the east of the barn are not of special interest.
