Description

Butterknowes Farmhouse is a bastle dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It was extended and refronted around 1800, with a rear wing and outshut added in the second quarter of the 19th century. The original sections are constructed from heavy rubble, while the extension, porch, and front wall are made of squared stone. The 19th-century parts also use squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings, and the building has a Welsh slate roof.

The farmhouse has two storeys and features one bay on the left and two bays on the right. The right section includes 4-pane sash windows set in chamfered surrounds with slightly projecting sills. The gables are coped, and there are stepped-and-banded end stacks. The left section, built around 1800 and slightly set back, has a renewed door in a chamfered surround on the left return of a projecting porch, which also features a 6-pane casement and a gable slit in the front wall. The windows to the left of the porch are similar to those on the right. The left gable is coped and has a stepped-and-banded end stack, with a 4-pane sash window on the left return. The rear elevation displays the original bastle masonry above the outshut, which includes a part-latticed window. To the left is a projecting wing with two low storeys and a hip-ended roof.

Inside, the north and west walls of the bastle are 1.20 metres thick. The east end wall, where one would typically expect to find both byre and upper doorways based on comparisons with other bastles like Brinkheugh and Thropton, is not exposed.
