Description

Rothbury Motors Garage is a two-storey building dated 1913, featuring the initials J.T.L. The garage has a rock-faced front and dressings, with snecked stone returns and a Welsh slate roof that includes glazed sections and red tile cresting. The broad three-bay gabled front is supported by large buttresses and includes a pair of shop windows on either side of a central recess that contains two part-glazed doors. Above this is a datestone, beneath a four-light casement window. To the left, there are boarded double doors under a basket arch, and a casement window to the right. The gable is stepped and shaped with flat coping. The left return of the building is divided into two parts: the main nine-bay section features stepped buttresses and windows in alternate bays, while the lower unbuttressed two-bay section to the left has casement windows. The right return is buttressed and has a pent outshut.

Inside, the garage boasts cast-iron roof trusses with diagonal strutting. A photograph, likely taken at the garage's opening, is housed in the Tourist Information Centre and shows that this pre-World War I garage remains virtually unaltered, making it a rare survival.
