Description
Armstrong Cottages are a group of almshouses built in 1896. They are constructed from rock-faced stone and topped with red clay tile roofs. The cottages are arranged around a rectangular garden that opens to the south, featuring six cottages at the rear and three on each side. Each cottage is single-storey and consists of two bays, with one bay projecting and gabled, accompanied by a pent wooden side porch. The centre of the north range has a larger gabled projection.
The porches have a central segmental arch, flanked by narrow round arches on turned shafts, leading to four-panel doors. The windows are either two or three-light mullioned types, set in chamfered surrounds and holding sashes. The buildings feature moulded bargeboards and braced pendants. In the centre gable of the north range, there is an inscribed tablet that reads, "Erected by WILLIAM GEORGE BARON ARMSTRONG of Cragside in Memory of ANNE ARMSTRONG HIS MUCH LOVED MOTHER MDCCCXCVI." The gable ends of the side ranges each have a plain raised tablet positioned between two windows. Additional decorative elements include tile ridge cresting, gable finials, and stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks with half-round pilasters on each face.
