Description

William Herrings Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in 1850. They are constructed from English bond red brick with black brick header dressings and stone dressings, topped with pentagonal slate roofs. The building is single storey and arranged in a 'U' shape, originally consisting of three cottages on the north and south sides and two central cottages. The design reflects a High Victorian Jacobean style.

The central range features a rectangular bow window with five fixed lattice work cast iron casements and a hipped slate roof. It has a shaped gable with an ogee apex and finial, decorated with English bond brick headers and a polished red granite plaque that reads "William Herrings' Almshouses erected and endowed MDCCCL". There are two boarded doors, and the screens connecting the north and south ranges are pierced by two 4-centred arches. The building has stone parapets and damaged cresting along the ridge, with a central stack that has only the plinths remaining of four round shaft stacks.

The north and south ranges each have three bay returns, featuring three 2-light fixed cast iron casement lattice windows and three boarded doors. The plinths of two sets of ridge stacks are also present. The returned shaped gables include 4-light casements and brick header diapering, with a "W" in the south gable and an "H" in the north gable. Stone quoins, kneelers, and shaped gable parapets complete the design.
