Description
Harpley War Memorial is made of marble and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Lawrence, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial is prominently placed to the left of the churchyard path that leads to the south church porch. It features a simple marble obelisk that is square in shape, standing on a tapering plinth with a three-stepped base below. The memorial is set within a square area that is kerbed and gravelled. The plinth displays inscriptions in applied metal lettering.
The main dedicatory inscription states: "THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHIONERS OF HARPLEY/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE GALLANT MEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The names of those commemorated, along with their unit or regiment, are recorded on the sides of the plinth. Additionally, there is a later dedication that reads: "THESE MEN ALSO SERVED/ WITH OTHERS FROM THIS PARISH/ IN THE 1939 - 1945 WAR."
