Description

The building occupied by W.G. Mackay Ltd is a former school, dated 1841, designed in a Tudor style. It features tooled stone with cut dressings, with blue slates on the section facing Bridge Street and purple slates on the section facing Haw Hill. The building is arranged in an L-shape.

The elevation facing Haw Hill is two storeys high and has a layout of two bays plus one. On the right side, a slightly projecting gabled section displays a chamfered plinth and a later doorway beneath a large three-light mullioned-and-transomed window, which has a hoodmould. There is a pointed slit under the coped gable, supported by moulded kneelers that carry a bellcote with a four-curved arch and a moulded finial. The lower left part of the elevation features a vertical-panelled door on the right, set under a four-centred arch with a hoodmould, and a shield with the date above it. To the left, there is a shop window located in an older cart entrance, which has chamfered jambs and a timber lintel, beneath a six-light casement. The left gable is coped and has a rebuilt end stack.

The three-bay right return facing Bridge Street shows lower windows with renewed glazing and two-light mullioned windows in gablets that hold six-pane sashes, except for the rightmost window, which has lost its mullion.

This building was originally the Tomlinson School, established through a bequest from the vicar of that name. Later extensions to the west and at the rear are not considered to be of special interest.
