Description
Percy's Cross is a wayside cross dating from the late 15th century, with a 19th-century enclosing wall and railings. It is constructed from sandstone and cast iron. The cross features a square socket stone that supports a shaft with chamfered angles. Each face of the shaft is adorned with relief carvings of crescents, fusils, and lucies (pikes), along with fetterlocks on the angle chamfers. The head of the cross is missing, and its overall height is approximately 3 metres. The enclosing dwarf wall has chamfered coping and supports rails with barbed tops, along with a similar gate on the north side.
The carved motifs represent Percy emblems, and the cross commemorates Sir Ralph Percy, who died leading the Lancastrian army at the battle of Hedgeley Moor on 23rd April 1464.
