Description
Path House is a house built in 1813, located in Allendale Town. The front elevation is made of tooled ashlar, while the returns and rear are constructed of rubble. It features a hipped slate roof and stepped stone end stacks. The lower section on the right is set back and also made of rubble with a slate roof and a stone gable stack. The house has three storeys and is symmetrical with three bays plus one. It has a plinth and sill bands.
There are three curved steps leading up to a central flush-panelled door that has a traceried fanlight above it, all under a keyed archivolt. The windows are 16-pane sash windows. The right extension includes a boarded door with a 12-pane sash window to the left, and similar windows are found above. To the far right, there is a later lean-to with an external stone stair leading to a first-floor door. A flight of stone steps runs alongside the left return. The rear elevation features a tall round-headed stair window with patterned glazing bars. The interior has not been seen. It is reputed that Dorothy Forster was born here.
