Description
The Hotspur Hotel is an inn, originally built in the early 19th century and restored in 1883. The dates 1806 and 1883 are inscribed on the lintel of a rear door, now internal, and likely refer to the original construction and subsequent restoration work. The inn is constructed of squared stone with a slate roof, featuring corniced stone ridge and gable stacks. It stands three stories high with three bays, each incorporating a small projecting bow. The building has a plinth and sill bands. A four-panel door with an overlight is located between the first and second bays, set within a surround featuring Tuscan pilasters supporting a pulvinated frieze and a swan-neck pediment decorated with rosettes. Most of the sash windows have lost their glazing bars, with a curved plan, except for a later 19th-century sash window on the ground floor between the first and second bays, which is set into the blocking of an earlier doorway. The rear elevation features a tall, round-headed stair window with margined glazing and a later 19th-century canted bay to the right.
