Walled Garden Circa 200 Yards West Of Twizell House

The walled garden located approximately 200 yards west of Twizell House is dated 1819 and was designed by Prideaux John Selby. It is constructed of random rubble with brick lining in English garden wall bond and features flat coping. The walls are around 12 feet high on the north side, sloping down to about 9 feet on the east and west sides, and further down to approximately 5 feet on the south side. The north wall includes two boarded doors with segmental heads, one of which has a lintel inscribed with "PJS This was a heated wall. 1819." There is a similar doorway in the east wall, and the garden has a rounded north-east corner with two lean-to buttresses on the outside of the east wall. Prideaux John Selby was known for his works "Illustrations of British Ornithology," published in 1821, and "History of British Trees."
