Description
The Adamson and Carr headstones, located to the south of the parish church vestry in Whitley Chapel, date from 1860 and 1868 and were crafted by W. Anderson and the former stone mason H. Close. Made of sandstone, both headstones feature shaped shouldered heads and inscription surrounds with spiralled pilasters, along with the masons' signatures on the right edge.
The western stone includes a draped urn and mourners with the inscription 'IN ADAM ALL DIE' beneath an ascending angel, accompanied by the inscription for Thomas Adamson of Spitalshield, who died in 1860. The eastern stone depicts a robed figure with a nimbus pointing to a book and bears the inscription for John Carr of Dotland Park, who died in 1831, along with references to his family. This stone is likely from 1868, the year of death of one of Carr's sons.
