Description

Low Dalton Cottages is a row of three houses located in Hexhamshire Dalton. The western house dates back to the 17th century but was largely rebuilt in 1780, as indicated by a dated lintel featuring the initials IPM. The other two houses are from the 18th century and were altered in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed from rubble with stone slate roofs and are two storeys high, featuring five bays in an irregular arrangement.

The left bay, which is the western house, has a renewed door and a 16-pane sash window to the left, with a 12-pane Yorkshire sash window above it, both with tooled lintels. The central house consists of two bays and includes a central wooden gabled porch with 4-pane sash windows, the upper ones located in gabled half dormers. The right part, or eastern house, has two narrower bays, a central boarded door with a 4-pane overlight, and is flanked by 4-pane sash windows, with 20th-century casements above in gabled half dormers. The left end features brickwork, and there are two ridge stacks. At the rear, the western house displays masonry and quoining typical of the 17th century. The cottages were unoccupied at the time of the survey.
