Description
The building located 20 metres north of Westside Farmhouse is a former house that now serves as an agricultural store. It is a bastle derivative house, likely built around 1610, featuring a dwelling above a byre. The structure is made of squared rubble with stone dressings and has a stone slate roof, with a reduced stack on the left gable. It stands two storeys tall and has four irregular bays.
On the ground floor, there are two ventilation slits and a doorway with a flat-pointed head. The first floor includes a single-light window with a chamfered surround, a two-light mullioned window, a door with a flat-pointed head in a square frame, and another single-light window with a chamfered surround. The rear elevation has a ground floor with a ventilation slit and two later porches, while the first floor features a small square window near the left end, constructed in a timber frame with mortices for a central mullion and iron bars.
Inside, the building retains original rough transverse ceiling beams and heavy corbels for a hearth at the left end. The first floor shows remnants of a fireplace at the left end (the right end is obscured by hay) and four roof trusses, with the central pair being original and of principal rafter form with collars, supporting two levels of purlins. This building is noted for being somewhat superior to typical bastle houses and may be slightly later in date. Its construction can be approximately dated due to the discovery in 1899 of a hoard of 91 silver coins minted between 1554 and 1606, which were hidden in a ground-floor wall.
