Description
Nos. 6 to 8 Front Street are three cottages that are part of a planned village development from the late 18th century by Sir Edward Swinburne, who passed away in 1786. The cottages are constructed from dressed stone and feature a graduated Lakeland slate roof. They are single storey with ten bays and include three boarded doors. Cottages 7 and 8 have Yorkshire sash windows, while cottage 6 has 20th-century windows. There is a band above the windows, and paired wooden brackets support the widely-overhanging eaves. The cottages also have corniced ridge and end stacks.
Inside, each room was originally built with a transverse, brick, segmental vault, although these are mostly hidden by false ceilings now.
