Description

Middleton Mill and Miller's House is a mill and miller's house from the mid-18th century, with an upper storey added to the mill and the cottage extended in the 19th century. The structure is built of squared stone, with some parts tooled in the 19th century, and features slate roofs.

The west front of the mill has three storeys and three irregular bays. There is an opening for the head race at the foot of the wall, and the upper floors have part-slatted windows, except for a late 19th-century sash window on the first floor to the left. The right gable is coped with moulded kneelers and has a stepped and corniced stack at the left end.

To the left of the mill is the cottage, which is one storey with three bays. It has a central renewed door, a late 19th-century sash window with a slightly projecting sill to the left, and an upper window to the right set in an old chamfered surround. The left gable features reverse-stepped coping and a stepped and corniced stack. At the far left, there is a lower one-bay extension with a late 19th-century sash window and a coped left gable with moulded kneelers that support a stepped and corniced stack.

On the rear elevation of the mill, there is a stone external stair leading to a boarded door, and to the right, a boarded door with a chamfered surround that has incised dates of 1762 and 1767 on the jambs. The outshut at the rear of the cottage is not of interest.
