Description
The Steelworkers' War Memorial, located approximately 15 metres southwest of the South Durham Steelworks Social Club, was built around 1920. It is made of grey and pink granite and features a panelled square shaft that stands on a square base with two shallow sandstone steps. The shaft has round angle shafts and etched capitals, which rise from the tops of volutes that cap diagonal buttresses. It is topped with a coved cornice and a pediment adorned with antefixae that have etched ornamentation. At the top of the shaft is a fluted and corniced drum and dome, finished with an urn finial. The panels on the shaft display the names of those who fell in the Great War (1914-1918) in lead inlaid lettering, with additional names inscribed on the west side of the plinth.
