Description
The Old Dock Offices and rear wings, built in 1846 by James Simpson from London, are located on Victoria Terrace in Hartlepool. This Grade II listed building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs and is designed in a Neo-classical style with a "U" plan. It features two storeys and three bays, with the center bay projecting slightly. The entrance has a Roman Doric distyle porch, with a doorway that includes two-panelled double doors and an overlight. The first-floor window is adorned with a floating cornice on consoles. There are two-storey segmental-plan bay windows on either side, which have pilasters and entablatures. All windows are sashed and include glazing bars and margin lights. A band runs between the floors, with a narrow frieze below the eaves cornice and a shallow parapet. The building has shallow-pitched hipped roofs and six yellow brick stacks.
A central clock tower is present, consisting of two stages: a square pedestal with clock faces set within circular openings, topped by an open, segmental-arcaded, octagonal bellcote that has a moulded cornice, although the dome is missing. The slightly later rear wings are two-storey and six-bay, set back and designed in a similar style. There are later extensions adjoining the rear wings, but these are not of interest. At the time of the survey, the building was disused.
