Description
Church Square Chambers is a commercial building dating from around 1850. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone ashlar quoins and dressings, topped by a slated roof. The building has three storeys and six bays. The door surrounds in the end bays feature entablatures with moulded and modillioned cornices, although the right end bay now contains a window. There is a roll-moulded plinth, a ground-floor cornice, and a tall blocking course. The ground and first-floor windows are round-arched and hollow-chamfered, with rusticated alternating jambs and voussoirs. The first-floor windows have a triple keystone and an inner dripmould. The second-floor windows are segment-headed and set in architraves, with a cill string and keys that rise to the top entablature, which has a dentilled and modillioned cornice and a parapet. The left corner bay is blank and entirely made of rusticated ashlar. The roof is hipped, and the left return features a projecting quoined chimney with a window at the base and a niche at the top, along with a plainer altered section behind. This building is included for its group value with Christ Church.
