Description
Christ Church is a redundant church built between 1850 and 1854 by E.B. Lamb from London. It is constructed of rockfaced, snecked limestone with plain clay tile roofs and is designed in a quasi Early English style. The church features an aisled nave, transepts, an aisled chancel with a half-octagonal apse, and vestries located at the angles of the nave and transepts, along with a west tower.
The tower is four stages high, with the second and third stages set back behind broad chamfered string courses. It has a high battered parapet supported by a corbel table, which is topped with a pierced balustrade. A turret with a splay-footed spirelet rises above the southeast angle of the tower. The clock mechanism, made by W. Potts from Leeds in 1911, has clock faces on the north, east, and west belfry openings. There is a porch on the west side of the tower.
The windows and other details reflect the Early English style, including rose windows in the transept gables and a tripartite east window. The crossing is illuminated by an octagonal timber lantern topped with a tiled, sprocketed, low-pitched fleche. The church contains good stained glass in the chancel and transept windows. Most internal fittings have been removed, but the west gallery made of wood and an octagonal oak pulpit on a carved stone pedestal remain. The church is disused at the time of this survey.
