Description
Bank Chambers is a commercial building located on Church Street in Hartlepool, constructed around 1913. It is designed in a restrained Baroque style and built from sandstone ashlar, with a roof that is not visible. The building stands three storeys high and features five bays. The ground floor is banded rusticated and has an entablature with a modillion cornice. The two outer bays project slightly and contain double doors with patterned overlights, framed by enriched architraves adorned with paterae and angle lion masks. Ornate scrolled triple keys are integrated into bayleaf friezes and modillion cornices. Above the doors are panels that read 'BANK' and 'CHAMBERS'.
The middle bays feature long windows with modern glazing set in plain reveals, and enriched plaques with insignia are positioned between them. The first-floor windows have continuous projecting sills and are topped with alternate triangular and segmental pediments above entablatures. The central window is framed by an aedicule with Ionic pilasters, while blind balustrades sit below the windows in the outer bays, where giant rusticated quasi Ionic pilasters flank the windows and support the top entablature with a modillion cornice. Short end-bay towers with raised panels are present, and a balustraded parapet runs between the towers. The second-floor windows are square and set in eared and shouldered architraves.
