HARTLEPOOL CHURCH SQUARE NZ 5132 (in middle of road) 11/49 Monument to Sir William Gray, approx. 20m to south-west of Christ Church.

Monument, 1898, by William Day Keyworth, Junior (London); executed by Rovini and Partanti (Fulham) using the 'cera perduta' process. Bronze figure, marble pedestal and sandstone steps. Figure in mayoral robes and chain of office, seated in Chief Magistrate's chair and holding plans for West Hartlepool Municipal Buildings, on simple pedestal inscribed : "Sir William Gray, J.P., D.L., First Mayor of West Hartlepool, 1887-88. Erected by public subscription 1898". Base of 2 steps.
