Description
The monument to Sir William Gray, located approximately 20 meters southwest of Christ Church, was erected in 1898. Designed by William Day Keyworth, Junior, and executed by Rovini and Partanti, it was created using the 'cera perduta' process. The monument features a bronze figure of Sir William Gray, dressed in mayoral robes and a chain of office, seated in a Chief Magistrate's chair while holding plans for the West Hartlepool Municipal Buildings. The figure stands on a simple marble pedestal, which is inscribed with the words: "Sir William Gray, J.P., D.L., First Mayor of West Hartlepool, 1887-88. Erected by public subscription 1898." The monument is set on a base with two steps.
