Description
Wesley Methodist Church is a church built between 1871 and 1873 by Hill and Swan. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features sandstone ashlar facing on the principal east front. The building has a hipped slate roof and consists of two storeys and a basement, with a five-bay front. A flight of 12 stone steps leads up to a Corinthian tetrastyle portico located in the middle three bays. This portico has a full entablature that extends over the end bays and is supported by angle pilasters. The pediment above features a lunette surrounded by foliate ornament.
The door and window openings are round-headed, with archivolts and impost mouldings that continue as string courses. The end bays have leaded lights, with the ground-floor windows featuring balustraded aprons. The first-floor middle bays have sash windows, and below them are three-panelled double doors with leaded-light fanlights. There is a band between the floors, and the parapet has balustraded panels at the end bays.
The side elevations consist of seven bays, with blocked flat-arched basement windows and round-headed windows on the ground and first floors, which have stone hood-moulds and impost bands. The ground-floor windows have leaded lights, while the first-floor windows are sashes with stone sills that continue as a band. A later church hall attached to the north-west corner is not of interest. At the time of the survey, the church was disused, and the galleried interior had been extensively damaged.
