Description
The Town Wall and Sandwell Gate in Hartlepool are early 14th-century town fortifications and a retaining wall that face Commissioners' Harbour. The structure is made of roughly-dressed and coursed limestone, along with random rubble limestone, and stands between 4 meters and 6 meters high and 2 meters to 3 meters thick, stretching approximately 380 meters in length, including the Sandwell Gate.
On the seaward side, there are battered buttresses, while a rampart walk is located above road level on the landward side, behind a parapet. The Sandwell Gate, a late 14th-century pointed-arched gateway, is situated on the seaward side. Its arch features two chamfered orders and is flanked by buttresses that rise to the full height of the parapet above a string course. Inside the arch, there is a segmental barrel vault with chamfered ribs, and a shallow triangular arch can be found on the landward side. This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 24.
