Description

Victoria Buildings and 2 Middlegate are former offices and shops built in 1853. The building is constructed of red brick with white brick and ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs, and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The front facing Victoria Street features a central four-light shop window, flanked by pointed arch doorways that have double glazed panel doors and overlights, all set in white brick surrounds with carved ashlar capitals. On either side of the entrance are triangular-shaped shop fronts, each with three lights, also surrounded by white brick and featuring ashlar carved capitals. Above these shop fronts are two painted white brick panels. Further up, there are seven windows arranged in a pattern of 2:1:2:1:1, all within pointed white brick surrounds with ashlar carved impost blocks, and each window has two-light wooden Gothic casements. The curved street corner on the left includes a doorway with a curved ashlar hood. On the Middle Gate front, to the left is a wooden shop front with a glazed door, while to the right is another shop front with a triangular-headed white brick surround and a four-panel door. Beyond this, there is a single window with a similar surround. Above, there is a painted white brick panel and five pointed arch windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, all featuring two-light Gothic casements.
