Description

St Mary's Water Gate is a gate and flanking walls that were originally part of the town walls, dating from the 13th century. The structure is made of coursed and squared red sandstone. It features a pointed and chamfered arch facing the river, along with a wide chamfered segmental arch on the town side. Buttresses are located on either side of the arch towards the river, with lengths of stone wall extending on both sides. Above the arch, there is a later brick wall approximately 1.5 meters high.
